Promoting dialogue between ECtHR and Media Freedom Community

The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, supported by the Council of Europe, will hold the conference “Promoting dialogue between the ECtHR and the media freedom community” on 24 of March 2017 in the Council of Europe’s Agora Building in Strasbourg.

The one-day conference aims to bring together judges and lawyers of the European Court of Human Rights and media lawyers, academics, policymakers, journalists, media professionals and civil society representatives active in the field of media law and freedom of expression. It will provide a platform to discuss the ECtHR case law in cases concerning freedom of expression of media and journalists.

The event is organized in cooperation with ARTICLE 19, the European Federation of Journalists, Ghent University Human Rights Centre, Index on Censorship, the Institute of European Media Law, the International Federation of Journalists, the International Press Institute, the Media Legal Defence Initiative, the Mass Media Defence Centre and PEN International.

Key themes to be discussed during the conference include:
● Defamation, privacy and the processing of personal data
● Investigative journalism, access to information, protection of sources and whistleblowers
● The right to protest and the role of the media during protests.
